The Exorcism of William Morsely, Prologue Part One

Father Hennessy stood crooked, his back sloped from the years that the weight of the cloth brought. Shuffling across the carpet of his office, he stopped at his personal bar, contemplating whether or not now would be a good time to have a drink. Throwing caution to the wind, his gnarled hands, shaking with the early onset of some unknown disease, took a heavy glass before pouring himself a liberal amount of brandy into the cup. Holding it between his fingers, he swirled the liquor about in his glass as he listened to the rain pound on the windows of his home away from home.

A Review of "Red Mist" by a Publisher

     I wrote a piece called Red Mist a few months ago, and posted it on the site for all of you to enjoy. I also submitted it to a few places for publication as I am wont to do.
     To my surprise, I got a personalized response from a publisher!
     Now, for those of you that are unaware, publishers generally do not have time for personalized rejection letters. So when I got this one, I was at first amazed, and then perplexed. If you take the time to write a personalized rejection letter, you spent a good deal of time on that piece. You probably even liked it.
     Anyway, this unnamed publisher was kind enough to let me know what led to my rejection...
         
         "Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to read "Red Mist". While the story is good and it held our interest, we have decided, after much discussion, that we are going to have to pass on this submission. We tend to be traditionalists where monsters are concerned, and this, to us, is a zombie (ghoul?) story. The idea of a zombie retaining enough human intelligence after being dead for so long to remember where he put his knife, and have the presence of mind to pick it up, use it, and drive it deep into the wet earth before taking up his funeral pose again, didn't gel with us"

     They then wished me the best of luck in finding a place for Red Mist. So take heart fellow authors, there are a few publishers that will let you know why they are rejecting your work. I love this publisher for this very reason, and will be looking into their work now.

The Darkness and Anna

The darkened house flashed in time with the distant streaks of lightning, followed by the rumbling of the gods as they clashed within the roiling darkness in the heavens, their tears streaking down and washing the land clean of its impurity. Everyone else was asleep, save for little Anna.

Perspective: Reviewing a Disney movie from Ten Minutes of Viewing Pleasure

     As some of you with children (or the heart of a child in a jar and/or other canopic device) may know, Disney released a movie simply titled Frozen some time last year. Now, I've long been a proponent that Disney films have some of the most over the top villains ever, and I have not seen this movie! But from three clips, I surmise a good deal of plot.

Dark Eclipse #31

     Another month, another Dark Eclipse! This month I discuss the true heroes of horror, the greats that lead to how we look at the genre as a whole. I of course could only touch on a few, but I think I touched on some of the greatest influences that we've had.

     As for stories, I enjoyed it all, especially "Devils of Cain's Island" by Kris Ashton. For $1.99, it's definitely worth a read!

Tales of the Unseelie Court is now out!

     An anthology a tad on the fantastical side of horror, Tales of the Unseelie Court is a mirror to the anthology, Tale of the Seelie Court. My addition is of course to the Unseelie version, as my piece is more horror based (as always). There are a great number of quality pieces in each anthology, so check them both out.

     To those unaware, Seelie/Unseelie are the names of mythical creatures commonly known as fey or fairies. From imps to boggarts to gremlins and goblins, the Unseelie are considered the darker aspects of these natural entities. Their alien emotions and actions are hard for humanity to understand, and even harder to deal with.

     Take a look and see if these stories tickle your fancy. We would all (we being the indie authors) appreciate if you would download a copy and let us know how we did.

A Dark Night

Slowly rousing from your dead sleep, you first take notice of your wooden ceiling, smacking your dry lips as you stir within the confines of your bed. Bloated, you roll over and pull a pillow over your head. From beneath the pillow, you blink away the sleep from your eyes, staring at the clock beside your bed.

Site Status

     The site will be posting stories in a slower fashion, as I am wrapping up work on my first novel, Jack in the Box. As many of you may have noticed, I removed the sections of the book from the site. I did this as a precursor to a publisher asking me to do so.
     I have about fifteen to twenty bobbers in the publishing pond, and am just waiting for bites at the moment. When a story gets rejected I'll willingly put it up on the site. Not to mean you all get the scraps, but I am trying to get my feet off the ground here.
     In lighter news, Demonic Visions will be having a third installment with a never-before-seen story of mine being featured. I'll post the link for it.
